Before the Blue Hen Chicken was adopted as the state bird, the State Federation of Women's Clubs of Delaware recommended the scarlet cardinal. The cardinal is a beautiful bird that is a year-round resident of Delaware. Club members touted the cardinal's good traits,

    "he is first of all, a good father and an excellent husband...., [that] he is also one of the most beautiful birds in existence, his carriage and baring are aristocratic, he is polite to his neighbors and is a very great gentleman. ...it is a good idea to have the state represented by this crested prince of the bushes."
